The councillors representing the 14 wards in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have assured their constituents of quality representation.

The councillors who were recently inaugurated by the Chairman of the LGA, Hon. ThankGod Anago, promised to go the extra mile to justify the confidence reposed in them by their people.

Leader of the councillors, Hon. Michael Ekemezie, told THE GAVEL that he was prepared for the job and that he would lead the House well to ensure that they actualise their legislative targets.

Ekemezie, who represents Amansea ward in the legislative arm of the government, said that he was aware of the tasks laid before him and as such would not disappoint his people.

“I will put them first in my legislative duties. We will make sure that they benefit from this government”, he assured.

The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Richard Jidendu, said that he would not rest until he actualised the purpose for which his people of Isuaniocha elected him.

“I will work efficiently and effectively to deliver quality leadership to the good people of Isuaniocha”, said he.

The representative of Amanuke ward, Hon. Obinna Achebe, told THE GAVEL that he would support the government’s policies that would bring development to his constituency.

“I am well prepared for this assignment. Amanuke is a big community, so anybody representing a town like that must be well prepared. So, I am well prepared for this legislative duty.

“I like women and children a lot. I am interested in the education of our children and will make sure that children will have a conducive environment to carry out their academic activities.

“I will look into our roads especially the ones leading to the farmlands so that our farmers can always have smooth access to their various farms. These are the two major things I have in mind”, Achebe stated.

For Hon. Liberty Nnonyelum who represents Urum ward, bringing down the dividends of democracy to his community was his major priority.

“I will fight and advocate for them. I will listen to their concerns as they elected me to do and make sure that all their needs will be attended to”, he said.

“I feel blessed to be elected by my people to represent them. They saw my qualities and the energy in me and decided to elect me to work for them. I am a servant to my people and they know full well that I can represent them well at the local government.”

The representative of Ebenebe ward 2, Agu Kenechukwu, said that he was concerned about the state of their schools, lamenting that some of them were dilapidated.

“In the first place, I contested to represent my ward because I have their interest at heart. So, now that I am here, I will make sure that they will get their share from the government.

“We need youth empowerment in my ward. There is also a need to renovate some of the schools in my ward to make them conducive for teaching and learning. In this age and time, education matters.

“Some of the schools in Ebenebe are not fenced; and you know that security is important. I feel pained each time I see our schools fenceless. Some of our schools are dilapidated.

“Again, some teachers don’t go to school on time. I feel pained when I see some of the wrong things going on in our schools.

“It is from school that we will have lawyers, doctors, engineers and the rest of them tomorrow. And it is to make things right that I am here”, Agu stated.

On his part, Hon. Chidiebele Ikegbunam who represents Mgbakwu ward said that he would work for the peace and development of his ward given his wealth of leadership experience.

“It won’t be bring and chop but bring and work. This is time to work. As a youth, I ought to lay foundations and not to destroy.

“My people believe in what I can do. I have done similar things in good aspects before now. So, I personally will make sure that the government is closer to them”, Ikegbunam said.

The councillor for Achalla ward 2, Austin Chukwuma, said: “By God’s grace, I will work for my people by ensuring that they get their share from the government. I am not here to destroy things or cause troubles but to repair and make better.

“I plan to look into the water needs of my people. I will make efforts to provide water to the areas that do not have access to water. I will also look into our primary healthcare system and schools to make sure things move smoothly.”

Meanwhile, the LGA’s chairman, Anago, told THE GAVEL that he would work very hard to meet the expectations of the people of the area and that he would carry the councillors and the supervisors along.

“I advise the councillors and the supervisors to always remember that our people are expecting so much from us, and that we cannot afford to let them down.

“We must work hard to meet their various expectations. They cannot vote for us for nothing. We must deliver on our campaign promises to them”, he assured.

Also speaking, secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the LGA, Chief Amaechi Obiesili, said that the party would keep an eye on the elected officials to monitor their performance.

“Let them work hard, do their best to make the people that elected them proud. Let them do their best to deliver the dividends of democracy to their communities.

“There is no shortcut to it. If you don’t do well, everybody will know and next time they won’t support you for another elective position. And you know our governor is a no-nonsense person.

“So, I advise them to deliver the dividends of democracy to their people. Even if it’s one naira that they were given for their people, they should make sure that it reaches the ground”, Obiesili advised.

Defection to ADC a miscalculation, coalition an aberration — Bauchi gov

Published

By

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has criticised those who left the PDP for the African Democratic Congress, calling their move a strategic blunder and labeling the coalition as a political anomaly.

Speaking at the ongoing Consultative Conference of PDP Founding Fathers and Stakeholders in Abuja, themed “Reclaiming Our Legacy, Renewing Our Collective Vision,” Mohammed cautioned that individuals cannot maintain membership in two political parties simultaneously.

Notable figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu, are among those who have recently defected from the PDP to join the ADC-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

In his response, the governor expressed disappointment over their decision to abandon a stronger platform for one without a solid foundation, asserting that the PDP will ultimately prove them wrong.

He said: “If somebody wants to leave PDP to go to another place, how is this smart in thoughts and in thinking? Because the PDP has history, a legacy, a structure everywhere and the governors are doing their best.

“But because we are being hunted and we know what we are going through, and it is not for us to be cowardly and be talking about it. Yes, politics is local. Some may go due to certain reasons, certain permutations, calculations, but I think they will be proved wrong.

“Even our elders that have gone, we don’t want to diminish them, we don’t want to denigrate or abuse them. We are telling them with humility: come back. That’s what the National Chairman has said — come back.

“This is what you have built. Where there are governors, where there are senators, members of the Houses, speakers, offices, local government chairmen, you are going to a party that has no office. It’s a malady.

“We reason with them. Maybe in terms of their own calculation, they want to actualize their aspiration — to get tickets. But do you want to get a ticket and lose? So please, come back. You have no reason to go anywhere.”

The Bauchi State governor stated that all PDP governors are providing effective governance in their respective states.

He continued, “But certainly, as the Chairman has said, we cannot take indiscipline to a level where it becomes contagious. If you are in PDP, you are in PDP. You cannot be in PDP and be in coalition with another party. We cannot do this. But you have all the time to decide. Coalition is an aberration, yes, I said it.

“You cannot belong to two places. You cannot be an Aphrodite. You cannot be a man and a woman at the same time. Be who you will be. But we will still give you the opportunity to have a thought, because you are our leaders.

“But if you are going, don’t demarket us. Demarketing of the PDP is not fair. Most of you actualized your political aspirations through this party. Some of them left us and caused our loss in 2015, and yet we accommodated them.

“And they left and came back. Some of them became governors, and some of them took tickets, just sprayed. It is only in PDP that you get that.

“But sadly, we still respect them. But they should respect us too. We are not afraid of anybody in politics.”

Obi free to contest with or without me in 2027 — Datti Baba-Ahmed

The 2023 vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, is free to seek the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections, whether or not he returns as his running mate.

Baba-Ahmed stated this on Wednesday while speaking as a guest on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme.

“They are two key individuals that I have tremendous respect for; one is Peter Obi. I welcome him openly.

“The Labour Party welcomes him to still come and retain the Labour Party ticket and contest in 2027 with or without me. And the ADC is welcome to adopt a southern candidate,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The former senator said Nigeria needs leaders with the capacity to govern effectively and not deliver failure.

“We want capacity. We want compassion. We want people who will develop Nigeria, leaders that matter, leaders that deliver promises, not those who will promise governance and deliver disaster,” he stated.

Responding to concerns that Obi’s recent participation in coalition talks led by the African Democratic Congress amounted to anti-party activity, Baba-Ahmed said it was not the case.

“This is not an anti-party activity. It is an unfolding situation. The meaning of a coalition is that political parties, interest groups, and individuals are coming together. It’s an unfolding situation.

“I attended coalition meetings. Peter Obi is welcome to continue to attend those coalition meetings,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He also shared his position on the contentious issue of zoning ahead of the 2027 general election, stating that the South should produce the next president.

In the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi and Baba-Ahmed ran on the platform of the Labour Party.

Obi finished third in the final results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while Bola Tinubu was declared winner.
