Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has increased registration fees for the 2026/2027 academic session, with students expected to pay between ₦143,000 and ₦298,000, triggering protests and renewed concerns over the affordability of university education in Nigeria.
The revised charges represent a significant increase from the ₦62,000 to ₦84,000 students paid during the previous academic session, with professional, medical and science-based programmes recording some of the steepest increases.
The development has drawn criticism from students and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which has rejected arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges, warning against transferring the financial burden of public education to students and their families.
