The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned that fake news, sensational reporting and unverified allegations of electoral fraud could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and worsen voter apathy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the warning on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in Lagos while addressing participants at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).
The conference, themed “2027 Elections: Trust, Transparency and Shared Responsibilities,” brought together online publishers, editors, media professionals, election stakeholders, civil society organisations and academics to examine the role of information and public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
