Nigeria faces a critical accountability question as the World Bank prepares to consider an additional $500 million in financing for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project: has the initiative demonstrated sufficient lasting results to justify more borrowing?
The World Bank’s board is scheduled to consider the proposed additional financing on October 29, 2026. If approved, total financing for the project would increase from $700 million to $1.2 billion, entirely through International Development Association (IDA) credit that Nigeria will be required to repay.
The proposed funding is intended to expand a project designed to combat land degradation, strengthen climate resilience and improve livelihoods across 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
