Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has described Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, as his great friend despite their political differences.
Soludo said that his views about Obi’s presidential aspiration since 2023 to date were strictly politics playing out, and nothing more.
He stated this in an interview with BBC Igbo in Awka, the state capital, stressing that his relationship with the former governor of the state is very cordial, despite their political differences.
“Peter Obi and I are great friends. Our families are on good terms. His wife is one of my children’s godmother at baptism, and my wife is one his children’s godmother at confirmation” Soludo said.
Alluding to the 2021 and 2025 governorship elections in the state which he contested, Soludo told his interviewer that Obi supported candidates of his choice in the two polls, but he defeated his candidates by the grace of God.
Although the governor said that he didn’t take it to heart, he appeared to be suggesting that it was now his turn to support his own presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 poll, who, in this case, is President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Soludo said: “When it comes to politics, everybody goes for their interests. This is politics. He has a different vision.
“He had a preferred candidate during the Anambra State governorship election. And I was contesting. He supported his preferred candidate. I won the election by the grace of God. But I don’t hold it against him.”
In November 2022, just months before the 2023 general elections, Soludo wrote a very long article titled: History Beckons and I will not be Silent (Part 1), telling Obi in concrete terms that he would not win the election.
Ever since then, Soludo has openly spoken against Obi’s presidential aspiration, campaigning against him anytime the opportunity called. He currently supports President Tinubu.
